2 INTRODUCTION
UPDATE is a utility program used to install all the various
anti-virus programs that have been developed by McAfee
Associates.
UPDATE does more than just copy the programs onto the harddisk
for you, it examines your harddisk and locates every copy of the
McAfee programs for you, even on multiple harddisks and across
networks. (At this time UPDATE only replaces the first
occurrence of each program found.)
Once the programs have been located UPDATE will (by default)
confirm each replacement or (optionally) you may have UPDATE
replace all selected files without confirmation.
UPDATE can be run interactively, from the command-line using
command-line switches to select options, or even from a DOS batch
file. UPDATE also contains built-in context-sensitive help,
meaning that when you ask for help what you get is relevant to
what you were doing at the time.
UPDATE was designed to run from a floppy disk and therefore will
not install programs TO a floppy disk. UPDATE was designed to be
efficient and small enough to fit onto a low-density non-bootable
(360K) diskette complete with it's help file and leave enough
room for the various McAfee programs to be installed onto a
harddisk.
NOTE: The Banyan Vines network also contains a file called
SCAN.EXE. When using UPDATE on the Banyan Vines
network we recommend that you DO NOT turn off the
overwrite confirmation option.

3 CREATING AN UPDATE DISKETTE
The UPDATE program was designed to operate from a floppy diskette
where the program would check the harddisk and transfer the
selected programs to it.
To create an update disk you will need:
* a blank formatted diskette (360K minimum size)
* the McAfee programs you wish to install
* an available computer with a diskette drive
For this example I will assume that you have an AT style computer
with one 5¼ inch 1.2MB diskette drive and a 40MB harddisk with MS
DOS 5.0 installed in a subdirectory called "C:\DOS".
Step 1: Make sure that the computer is on and that you see the
DOS prompt on the screen (i.e. "C:\>").
Step 2: Switch to the DOS subdirectory with the Change
Directory command "CD \DOS". This will change the
prompt to read "C:\DOS>".
Step 3: Put the diskette that you wish to use as the update
disk in drive A: and close the door.
Step 4: Format the diskette with the command "FORMAT A:". This
will prepare the disk to be used by the computer. When
the formatting completes answer "N" to the question of
formatting another disk. Now remove that diskette and
place it aside.
Step 5: Insert the UPDATE disk and type the DOS command
"DISKCOPY A: A:" (some versions of DISKCOPY do not
automatically format a diskette, if your does you can
skip step 4).
DISKCOPY will prompt you for a source diskette (which
is your diskette with the UPDATE program on it) and the
target diskette (which is the blank disk you used in
step 3).
When DISKCOPY finishes you will have two diskettes that
have the UPDATE program and help file on it.
Step 6: Now remove your UPDATE disk and insert one of the
McAfee Associates program diskettes. Copy the program
file to your update disk with the command:
"COPY A:<program>.EXE B:"
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 2
Replace the "<program>" label with the name of the
McAfee program that you are copying which is CHKSHLD,
CLEAN, NETSCAN, SCAN, VSHIELD or VSHIELD1.
You will be prompted when to change disks. Just
remember that the McAfee diskette is considered the
source and that the UPDATE disk is considered the
target.
Step 7: Repeat step 6 for each program you wish to copy to the
update diskette.
When you finish copying the files, if you've installed all the
programs your UPDATE diskette should have the following files:
UPDATE.EXE ─┬───── The UPDATE program and help file
UPDATE.HLP ─┘
CHKSHLD.EXE ─┐
CLEAN.EXE │
NETSCAN.EXE │
SCAN.EXE ├───── The McAfee program files
VSHIELD.EXE │

4 RUNNING UPDATE
First ensure that you have a clean (virus-free) system by either
running SCAN or NETSCAN on the harddisk or by booting up the
computer from a clean DOS diskette and then running SCAN or
NETSCAN.
Once the system has been determined to be virus-free and you have
created your UPDATE diskette, you are ready to begin. Running
UPDATE is as easy as 1) starting the program, 2) selecting the
files to update and 3) beginning the update process.
4.1 Starting the Program
Insert your UPDATE diskette in the drive and make that drive the
default drive by typing "A:" if your diskette is in drive A or
"B:" if your diskette is in drive B.
Start the program by typing "UPDATE" at the DOS prompt and
pressing the ENTER key on the keyboard.

The UPDATE screen is divided up into four distinct areas. These
are:
MENU BAR: This is where you will use the mouse or the keyboard
to select from the pull-down menus, and initiate the various
features and functions of UPDATE.
DISPLAY WINDOW: This is the largest area of the screen and is
where you will see the results of any selections you make.
STATUS LINE: This is where UPDATE will communicate any of its
information to you the user.
COPYRIGHT LINE: This line contains both the program copyright
and the version number of the program. Use this line to
determine the current version of the program that is running.
At the top right of the display is the current time displayed in
HH:MM:SS as read from the system clock. It displays in 24hr or
military time (i.e. 0-11 are am times and 12-23 are pm times).
4.2 Selecting files to update
Selecting files in UPDATE is done through the SETUP menu or from
the command-line with the commands: /ALL, /CHKSHLD, /CLEAN,
/NETSCAN, /SCAN, /VSHIELD or /SHIELD1.
When selecting files interactively, pull-down the SETUP menu and
move the highlight over the individual programs that you wish to
install.
You may notice that the highlight bar will skip over some
commands, or that some menu items don't contain a highlighted
letter. This is a feature of UPDATE that deactivates any program
menu item when the corresponding program is not found in the
startup drive/directory. Shown below is a partial representation
of the SETUP menu.

When the highlight is on one of the above menu items you can
toggle the "No" to "Yes" by pressing the ENTER key. When the
menu item is set to "No" then that program will not be installed
onto the harddisk. If the menu item is set to "Yes" then that
program WILL be installed onto the harddisk.
4.3 Beginning the Update Process
Once you have selected the files you want to install from either
the SETUP menu or the command-line. Use the left/right arrow key
to select the UPDATE menu item and press ENTER.
If no programs have been selected on the SETUP menu prior to
selecting the UPDATE menu item an error message will be displayed
on the status line.
When a valid command is enter on the command-line UPDATE will
automatically begin the update process. You will not have to
select it after the program starts.
4.4 Using the Mouse and Keyboard
If you have a mouse connected to your computer and the mouse
driver has been loaded you will see a small rectangle on the
screen. This is your mouse cursor. Clicking the left button on
any of the items on the menu bar will pull-down the menu or
perform the action associated with that name. When a menu is
pulled down clicking the left button when the mouse cursor is on
a menu item will perform that action.
If you have selected a pull-down menu and then change your mind
you can either click the left mouse button on a different menu to
open it instead or click the right mouse button to close that
menu altogether.
You will also notice that some of letters on the menu bar are
displayed in a contrasted color with the rest of the text
(highlighted on monochrome monitors), these are called hotkeys
pressing this key on the keyboard will pull-down the menu
associated with this menu item. When a menu is pulled down and
you press the hotkey listed on the menu it will perform that
action.
Also for the keyboard you will notice that one of the menu bar
selections is shown in reverse-video. This is called the menu
highlight and indicates which option will be activated by
pressing the ENTER key.
You can use the arrow keys to move the reverse-video highlight
and press ENTER or you can press the hotkeys.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 6
When a menu is displayed a highlight is also visible and in the
same fashion you can select an option by moving the highlight and
pressing ENTER or using the hotkeys.
While you are selecting commands you can press the F1 function
key instead of the ENTER to get help on the current menu item
(i.e. the current menu item is the highlighted item, not the one
that the mouse cursor is on). Experiment with selecting menu's,
menu items and help. Shown below is a sample help screen for the
SCAN menu item.

5 UPDATE COMMANDS
The commands on the Update menu give the operator the option of
starting the update process itself, spcifiying the drives that
UPDATE is to search for programs and whether or not to search any
network drive(s).

5.1 Begin update process
When this option is selected from the menu or the [F2] function
key is pressed then UPDATE begins to search all the logical hard
drive partitions specified in the drive list (see 5.2). If while
searching a drive UPDATE finds a file that matches the name of
one of the McAfee programs it remembers the drive and path of
where it found it.
As it finishes each drive it displays a summary of the programs
that it has found (if any). Shown below is a sample of the drive
summary window overlayed on the directory scan window.

║C:\XTGOLD\ ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
When UPDATE finishes searching the harddisk(s) and it has found
at least one of the program files it will default to installing
all the program files to that location. If several programs were
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 8
found then UPDATE will install each program to the location that
it was found on the harddisk.
Therefore if each program was found on a different place on a
harddisk or even on different harddisks each program would then
be individually installed to the location where it was found
during the search. By default UPDATE confirms each overwrite.
If no McAfee programs were located on the harddisk then UPDATE
attempts to read the "PATH=" statement in the DOS environment and
will install all the selected files into the first directory
listed in the "PATH=" line.
If no "PATH=" line has been defined then UPDATE will install all
the program files into the root directory of drive C:.
5.2 Included drive(s) list
When this option is selected from the Update menu or the [F3] key
is pressed UPDATE will display the list of drives that it will
search and allow you to edit it. The "Included drive(s) list"
menu option allows you to explicitly set the list of hard
drive(s) that the UPDATE program will search.
It's okay to have drives in the list that don't physically exists
because UPDATE performs a validation check for each drive. if the
drive cannot be accessed then UPDATE will not attempt to scan
that drive.

╚════════════════════════════════╝
By default the drive(s) list is set from C: to the highest drive
recognized by DOS (usually E: or F:). This can be increased by
including the "LASTDRIVE=" statement in your CONFIG.SYS file and
rebooting the computer.
For example if the drive list is set to "CDEKZ" then UPDATE will
only search drives C:, D:, E:, K: and Z:.
When you are working in the drive list entry line UPDATE displays
the line and places the cursor at the beginning of the line.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 9
If you begin typing at this point UPDATE assumes that you want to
enter in new information rather than edit the old information,
and it will clear the line before storing the new text.
If you use any edit function (such as the arrow keys) then UPDATE
assumes that you wish to edit the existing text and it will NOT
clear the line. This is called "conditional" editing.
The following editing commands are available when editing or
entering the drive list:
, arrow - move 1 character to the left or the right.
Backspace - delete character to the left.
Ctrl-R - restore field to original contents.
Ctrl-T - delete word to the right.
Ctrl-U - delete to the end of the field.
Enter - accept changes and leave.
Esc - abort data entry, leaves field unchanged.
Home/End - move to the beginning/end of field.
Ins/Del - toggle insert mode/delete character at cursor.
5.3 Define Installation path
The "Define installation path" menu option when selected will
display an input window on the screen that prompts you to enter
in the directory where you would like to store the McAfee program
files. The directory you specify must already exists on the
harddisk. UPDATE will not create it.
When this path is defined then UPDATE will skip the harddisk scan
and will attempt to install the program files directly into the
specified directory.
To have UPDATE resume scanning the harddisks, you must undefine
this path. To do so, select this option then press Ctrl-U to
delete the field and ENTER to accept the changes to the field.
UPDATE will now resume drive scanning.
NOTE: This path is automatically defined after each program
installation run.
5.4 Scan network drive(s)
The "Scan network drive(s)" menu option toggles between "Yes" and
"No".
If this option is set to "Yes" then UPDATE's program search will
include network drives if they are included in the the
"Included drive(s) list".
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 10
If this option is set to "No" then UPDATE will not search on any
drive identified as a network drive, even if the drive is
included in the drive list.
By default this option is set to "No" to search only the local
logical drives.
5.5 Network drive(s) start at
The "Network drive(s) start at" menu option when selected cycles
from drive C: to drive Z:.
When this option is selected UPDATE increments the drive by one
from the last drive selected. UPDATE considers the selected
drive and all above it to be network drives.
For example if drive F: is selected and the drive list is set to
"CDEFKZ" then drives F:, K: and Z: would be considered network
drives.
By default this option is set to F: and UPDATE considers all
drives above this to be network drives.

╚════════════════════════════════╝
All the menu items listed in the top section of the menu are the
names of the anti-virus programs that UPDATE can install. Select
any of these programs by highlighting that menu item and pressing
ENTER, or by clicking on the option with the left mouse button.
All the menu items listed in the middle section of the menu
modify the way UPDATE works. Similarly you select these options
by highlighting and pressing ENTER, or by using the mouse as
described above.
The exception is the last menu item "Use as Default Settings"
which saves all of the current settings as well as the current
color settings to a diskfile named "UPDATE.INI" to the drive and
directory where the program was started from (usually A:).
6.1 Perform a CHKSHLD update
The "Perform a CHKSHLD update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the CHKSHLD.EXE program from the disk containing the program to
the drive and directory location where the program was found.
If the program is not found in the searched drive(s), then UPDATE
will place the program in a directory defined in the "PATH="
statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 12
If no "PATH=" statement has been defined then UPDATE will copy
the program file to the ROOT directory of drive C:.
6.2 Perform a CLEAN update
The "Perform a CLEAN update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the CLEAN.EXE program from the disk containing the program to the
drive and directory location where the program was found.
If the program is not found in the searched drive(s), then UPDATE
will place the program in a directory defined in the "PATH="
statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
If no "PATH=" statement has been defined then UPDATE will copy
the program file to the ROOT directory of drive C:.
6.3 Perform a NETSCAN update
The "Perform a NETSCAN update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the NETSCAN.EXE program from the disk containing the program to
the drive and directory location where the program was found.
If the program is not found in the searched drive(s), then UPDATE
will place the program in a directory defined in the "PATH="
statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
If no "PATH=" statement has been defined then UPDATE will copy
the program file to the ROOT directory of drive C:.
6.4 Perform a SCAN update
The "Perform a SCAN update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the SCAN.EXE program from the disk containing the program to the
drive and directory location where the program was found.
6.5 Perform a VSHIELD update
The "Perform a VSHIELD update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the VSHIELD.EXE program from the disk containing the program to
the drive and directory location where the program was found.
If the program is not found in the searched drive(s), then UPDATE
will place the program in a directory defined in the "PATH="
statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 13
If no "PATH=" statement has been defined then UPDATE will copy
the program file to the ROOT directory of drive C:.
6.6 Perform a VSHIELD1 update
The "Perform a VSHIELD1 update" option toggles between Yes
and No, if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy
the VSHIELD1.EXE program from the disk containing the program to
the drive and directory location where the program was found.
6.7 Replace without asking
The "Replace without asking" option toggles between Yes and No,
if it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will copy over
existing files located without allowing the operator to confirm
the overwrite.

This file exists, should I overwrite it (Y/N):
If it is set to "No" then when an existing file is found the
UPDATE program will allow the operator to confirm the overwrite
by answering 'Y' or skip this file by answering 'N'.
In the case where no file exists on the searched drives, the
UPDATE will copy the file(s) and mark it as "(newly added)"
because no overwrite confirmation is necessary.
6.8 Copy if programs exists
The "Copy if program exists" option toggles between "Yes", "No"
and "Both". If it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will
copy a program from the UPDATE diskette to the harddisk only if
the program ALREADY exists on the harddisk.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 14
If the option is set to "No" then the UPDATE program will only
copy a program from the UPDATE diskette to the harddisk if it
does NOT already exists on the harddisk.
If the option is set to "Both" then the UPDATE program will copy
a program from the UPDATE diskette to the harddisk whether it
exists on the harddisk or not.
NOTE: By default this option is set to "BOTH" to allow all
files to be copied that are selected by the user.
6.9 Install all the programs
The "Install all the programs" option toggles between "Yes" and
"No". If it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will ignore
the settings of the individual programs and will install all the
anti-virus programs that were located on the startup drive and
directory.
If the option is set to "No" then the UPDATE program will not
ignore the individual settings of the programs and will install
only those programs that have been selected AND exist on the
startup drive and directory.
6.10 Display current time as
The "Display current time as" option toggles between "12hr" and
"24hr". If it is set to "12hr" then the system clock in the
upper-right corner of the screen will display the time in
standard 12 hour format (i.e. 4:30 PM).
If it is set to "24hr" then the system clock will display the
time in a 24 hour or military time format HH:MM:SS (hours,
minutes, seconds, i.e. 16:30:00 is 4:30pm).
NOTE: When the time is displayed in 24hr format, all hours
between 0 and 11 represent AM or morning times and all
hours between 12 and 23 represent PM or evening times.
6.11 Add a shadow to windows
The "Add a shadow to windows" option toggles between "Yes" and
"No". If it is set to "Yes" then the UPDATE program will add a
shadow to every window that it opens. This gives the windows a
"floating" or 3D effect.
If the option is set to "No" then the UPDATE program will not add
a shadow to the windows that it opens. This may be desirable
when running UPDATE on a laptop or other monochrome video
computers, since the visual effect is nullified by the lack of
color on these machines.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 15
6.12 Modify current colors...
The "Modify current colors..." option when selected will display
a secondary menu of each of the main areas of the screen where
colors can be changed.
Once an area is selected then UPDATE will display a color
selection window where the new color is selected from. The
operator merely moves to the desired color and presses the ENTER
key. When all the desired areas have been changed then select
the "Use as Default Settings" to make these color changes
permanent.
When the color configuration menu is displayed (as shown on the
next page) a color table is also displayed next to it showing the
current color selections of each of the color items on the menu.
When you select a menu item a full-screen display of the
available colors is presented. One of the colored options will
be encircled by a box and can be moved with the arrow keys.
Simply move the box-cursor over the desired color and press ENTER
to select it. When you return to the color menu the color table
will reflect the current colors.

6.13 Use as Default Settings
The "Use as Default Settings" option if selected creates or
updates a file on disk called UPDATE.INI.
UPDATE.INI contains the current settings of all the items on the
Setup menu, the current colors, current drive list and the scan
network drive(s) settings. It is automatically searched for by
UPDATE upon startup and if found the SETUP menu items are
initialized to the values stored in this file.
NOTE: The UPDATE.INI file must reside either in the same
directory where UPDATE.EXE is located, or in a
directory defined in the DOS "PATH=" statement in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 17
7 QUIT COMMANDS
The commands on the QUIT menu allow you to either shell to DOS
(where you temporarily leave the UPDATE program (it remains in
memory) and return back to it exactly where you left off, or quit
the UPDATE program completely (it is removed from memory). Shown
below is the QUIT pull-down menu.
Update Setup Quit F1=Help
╔═════════════════════╗
║ Shell to DOS ║
║ Exit UPDATE Program ║
╚═════════════════════╝
These options provides both a temporary exit from the program,
and a normal exit process that completely exits the program and
restores all processes and internal DOS structures.
When you are finished be sure to use the "Exit UPDATE Program"
option to allow UPDATE to perform all the necessary procedures to
close all files, and return all program resources to the
operating system.
7.1 Shell to DOS
Selecting this option causes UPDATE to stop all processes, save
the screen display and exit temporarily to DOS. This allows the
operator to execute any number of DOS commands or programs.
When UPDATE has shelled to DOS. It still remains in memory
(using about 120K bytes) and reduces the memory available for
other programs to run.
7.2 Exit UPDATE Program
Selecting this option causes UPDATE to stop all processes, close
all open files and return to the operating system.

8 CONTEXT SENSITIVE HELP
Using the Help feature in UPDATE is as simple as pressing the F1
key. When you press F1, UPDATE will display a page of help that
relates to the item of interest that you were performing. This
feature is called context-sensitive help.
Also within the HELP system some words or phrases may be
displayed in a contrasting color; these items are keywords that
lead to other areas of help. A keyword is "selected" when
displayed in a reverse-video color.
Additional help on the selected keyword displays when the
operator presses the ENTER key. Shown below is a sample of the
help menu:
Update Setup Quit F1=Help
╔══════════════════════╗

║ Help on Using Help ║
║ Index of Help Topics ║
╚══════════════════════╝
Selecting the "F1=Help" option on the main menu using either the
mouse or keyboard will pull down the help menu. These options
provide a mouseable or a secondary keyboard entry point into
UPDATE's extensive help system.
Primarily you would obtain help by using the arrow keys to
highlight an individual menu item and pressing the F1 function
key.
8.1 About Information
This option provides general information about UPDATE. It will
display general information about the operating environment that
UPDATE is running under. This type of information is useful when
calling for technical support.
Some of the information collected and displayed in the "About"
window is the version and copyright notice for UPDATE, the DOS
version, memory and default disk space available and the names of
the programs that are available for installation using UPDATE.
NOTE: When calling for technical support it is a good idea to
make a hardcopy of the "About Information" window. See
your DOS manual on using the "Print Screen" feature.

the use of keyword text links in the help text which allow you to
jump to other related topics in the help system.
8.3 Index of Help Topics
This option provides an index into all of the help topics
available in the help system. Each topic name is a keyword and
selecting a topic will take you directly to the topic of
interest. This provides a central location where ALL of the help
topics can be accessed. Shown on the following page is a sample

8.4 General Help Information
When you are in the help system you will notice that the bottom
border of the help screen will contain any combination of the
words "Quit", "PgUp" or "PgDn". These indicators are defined
below:
Quit: When this indicator appears on the bottom border you
may press ESC to exit the current help screen. If you
have a mouse clicking the left mouse button on the text
"Quit" or by clicking the right mouse button anywhere
on the screen will exit the current help screen and
return you back to the UPDATE program.
PgUp: When this indicator appears on the bottom border it
indicates that there is more help text available on
this topic on a previous screen, by pressing the PgUp
key on the keyboard or by clicking the left mouse
button on the text "PgUp".
PgDn: When this indicator appears on the bottom border it
indicates that there is more help text available on
this topic on the next screen, by pressing the PgDn key
on the keyboard or by clicking the left mouse button on
the text "PgDn".

9 COMMAND-LINE SWITCHES
All the features of update that can be selected interactively can
also be set through the use command-line switches. This makes
UPDATE ideal for use in DOS batchfiles which could be setup for a
total hands off installation. To use command-line options simply
enter each option on the same line with UPDATE separated with a
space.
Example...
A:\> UPDATE /plain /scan /netscan
The above example would turn off the shadow around the
windows and automatically install the SCAN.EXE and
NETSCAN.EXE programs if they were NOT found on the drive(s)
searched or ask to overwrite them if they WERE found on the
searched drive(s).
The commands themselves can be typed in using either upper or
lower case. UPDATE converts them to uppercase internally before
checking them against the valid command table.
Following are the description of all the command-line switches
that are recognized by UPDATE. UPDATE recognizes both the hyphen
(-) and the forward slash (/) as command separators.
9.1 ? (display list of command switches)
This command displays a list of the currently command-line
options that UPDATE recognizes, along with a short description of
what each option does.
9.2 /ALL (install ALL programs)
This is a command-line only feature and is a shortcut to typing
in all the individual program switches. It will update all the
programs that are available to be selected (see section 6.9).
9.3 /BATCH (batchfile mode)
This command is used when UPDATE is to be run from a DOS
batchfile. It signals UPDATE to return to DOS after performing
the update rather that remaining in interactive mode.
When the /BATCH command is used it also turns on the /NOASK
(without asking) command, since no operator intervention is
required or expected.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 22
9.4 /BOTH (ignore file exist status)
This command is the default setting for UPDATE, it allows any
selected file to be copied from the UPDATE diskette to the
harddisk regardless of whether it exists on the harddisk or not
(see 6.8).
Example: Assuming that the operator has elected to update ALL
the programs and that the "Copy if program exists"
option is set to "Both".

UPDATE Diskette HARDDISK
Even though the SCAN.EXE and the NETSCAN.EXE programs were the
only ones located on the harddisk, UPDATE updated every program
selected whether it existed on the disk or not.
9.5 /CHKSHLD (install CHKSHLD)
If the CHKSHLD.EXE program is on the install disk and this option
is selected, then this command selects the CHKSHLD program for
updating (see 6.1), otherwise this command is ignored.
9.6 /CLEAN (install CLEAN)
If the CLEAN.EXE program is on the install disk and this option
is selected, then this command selects the CLEAN program for
updating (see 6.2), otherwise this command is ignored.
9.7 /D:<lst> (define list of drive(s) to search)
This option overrides the default drive list used by UPDATE and
allows the operator to define the list of hard drives that will
be scanned during the update process (see 5.2). For example the
command "/D:CDEFGKZ" would tell UPDATE to search drives C: thru
G: and drives K: and Z:.
9.8 /EXISTS (update only existing files)
This option performs an intelligent update of only those McAfee
files that ALREADY exists on the harddisk. Of the files selected
by the user UPDATE will only update the ones that it finds on the
harddisk (see 6.8).
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 23
Example: Assuming that the operator has elected to update ALL
the programs and that the "Copy if program exists"
option is set to "Yes".

UPDATE Diskette HARDDISK
If the SCAN.EXE and the NETSCAN.EXE programs were the only ones
located on the harddisk then they would be the only programs that
updated.
9.9 /MONO (monochrome display)
By default the program displays in color, however for laptop and
users without color displays the /MONO switch causes UPDATE to
switch to a monochrome (black and white) color scheme that may be
easier to view.
The command-line switch /MONO takes precedence over the built-in
color defaults and any color settings stored in the UPDATE.INI
file. Using the "Modify Colors..." option on the SETUP menu the
colors can be changed.
9.10 /N:<drv> (define first network drive)
This option allows the operator to tell UPDATE what drive is the
first network drive. This can be set to any drive letter between
C: and Z:. By default UPDATE considers drive F: to be the first
network drive (see 5.5). This option also affects which drives
will be searched depending on the setting of the menu option
"Scan network drive(s)" (also see 5.4).
For example if the command was "/N:J" then UPDATE would assume
that drives J: and above are network drives.
9.11 /NETSCAN (install NETSCAN)
If the NETSCAN.EXE program is on the install disk and this option
is selected, then this command selects the NETSCAN program for
updating (see 6.3), otherwise this command is ignored.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 24
9.12 /NEW (update only new files)
This option performs an intelligent update of only those McAfee
files that DO NOT ALREADY exists on the harddisk. Of the files
selected by the user UPDATE will only update the ones that it
DOES NOT find on the harddisk (see 6.8).
Example: Assuming that the operator has elected to update ALL
the programs and that the "Copy if program exists"
option is set to "No".

UPDATE Diskette HARDDISK
Since the SCAN.EXE and the NETSCAN.EXE programs were the only
ones located on the harddisk, they would be the only programs
that were NOT updated.
9.13 /NOASK (without asking)
By default the UPDATE program will confirm all program
overwrites. This command will tell UPDATE not to ask for
confirmation if a file is about to be overwritten. Use with
caution (see section 6.7).
9.14 /OLDDOS (no DOS version test)
This is a command-line only feature. Use this command to allow
UPDATE to run on machines with a DOS version earlier than 3.3.
The interface presentation makes use of several international DOS
features found only in later versions of DOS (3.3 and above).
This command disables those features and bypasses the DOS version
test before the interface is activated and will allow UPDATE to
run.
It is highly recommended that the DOS version is updated to
MS-DOS version 3.30 or preferably MS-DOS version 5.00. UPDATE
has not been tested with DR-DOS.
9.15 /ONNET (scan drives on a network)
This option, toggles the "Scan network drive(s)" menu option to
"Yes". This allows UPDATE to scan any network drive(s) to which
the user has read/write access (see 5.4).
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 25
9.16 /PLAIN (no window shadowing)
This option turns OFF the window shadowing feature from the
command-line before the program starts. The window shadowing
feature is ON by default when UPDATE begins (see section 6.11).
9.17 /SAVE (save as default)
Saves the current program setting whether set from the
command-line or interactively to the UPDATE.INI file. This file
will be saved to the directory and drive where the program was
started from (see section 6.13).
9.18 /SCAN (install SCAN)
If the SCAN.EXE program is on the install disk and this option is
selected, then this command selects the SCAN program for updating
(see 6.4), otherwise this command is ignored.
9.19 /SHIELD1 (install VSHIELD1)
If the VSHIELD1.EXE program is on the install disk and this
option is selected, then this command selects the VSHIELD1
program for updating (see 6.6), otherwise this command is
ignored.
9.20 /VSHIELD (install VSHIELD)
If the VSHIELD.EXE program is on the install disk and this option
is selected, then this command selects the VSHIELD program for
updating (see 6.5), otherwise this command is ignored.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 26
10 COMMAND-LINE EXAMPLES
Shown below are some examples of the UPDATE program being used
with various command-line switches. Notice that it is not
necessary to type out the full command name.
Because UPDATE uses a minimal match technology when processing
the command-line, it is only necessary that enough of a command
is typed to distinguish it from another command.
UPDATE /CHK /V /NO updates the CHKSHLD & VSHIELD programs
without asking first to replace them.
UPDATE /ALL /NOASK updates all anti-virus programs without
asking first to replace them.
UPDATE /A /SA /OLD updates all anti-virus programs, asks the
operator to confirm each update and saves the
current options to disk in the UPDATE.INI
file, and skips DOS 3.3 specific functions
(use if DOS version is less than 3.3).
UPDATE /A /NO /BA updates all anti-virus programs without
asking first to replace them. Turns on
batchfile mode which will cause UPDATE to
exit to DOS when the program finishes.
McAfee Anti-Virus Update Utility Page 27
11 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
UPDATE seems to run okay until it tries to confirm an overwrite
of a file what's wrong?
UPDATE makes use of many of the advanced features of DOS in
normal operation. Many of these features are only found in
DOS version 3.3 and above. Try using the "/OLDDOS" command-
line switch to cause UPDATE to use only the standard DOS
calls.
Alternatively you could upgrade your version of DOS to
version 3.3 or later. Sometimes many versions of DOS sold
with clone computers have been customized by the
manufactured and therefore many not operate properly with
UPDATE.
Does UPDATE support a mouse?
Yes UPDATE supports the use of a mouse. It appears as a
small rectangular square on the screen. In general clicking
the left mouse button selects an item and performs the
action. Clicking the right mouse button aborts an operation
and/or closes menus.
I have a mouse connected to my machine but when I try to use it
with UPDATE nothing happens?
UPDATE automatically senses the presence of a mouse and will
activate it when the program begins. However the problem
might be that the mouse driver was not loaded before UPDATE
was run.
Check the AUTOEXEC.BAT file for the presence of a MOUSE.COM
or MOUSE.EXE driver or the CONFIG.SYS file for the presence
of a MOUSE.SYS driver. If in doubt check your mouse user's
manual for instructions on how to load your particular mouse
driver.
I noticed that when I select the color configuration menu item
that the mouse no longer seems to work?
During the screen redraw process we kept losing the mouse
when it was left activated. So we currently turn it off
while the color configuration menu is active and turn it on
afterwards. This should be resolved in a later version.

I ran UPDATE on my PC that was connected to a network and it
failed when it tried to examined my network drives, why?
Most likely the network server has been rebooted or network
communications have been lost while the local workstation
was online and the disk information from the local node was
not updated. Usually logging out and back in to restore the
network communications is all that's required for UPDATE to
access the network drives.
Running UPDATE on a PC that has been properly logged out of
the network is okay because no network drive information
exists and UPDATE will only scan the local harddisks.
When I ran UPDATE I received an out of memory message?
UPDATE requires approximately 512K of conventional DOS
memory to operate, TSR's and other resident programs can
reduce the memory available for conventional programs (like
UPDATE) to less than what is necessary to execute. Please
check your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files first and try
running UPDATE from a clean system.
When I finished using UPDATE and ran another program I received
an out of memory error message?
UPDATE like many DOS-based programs has a "Shell to DOS"
feature that allows you to temporarily exit UPDATE and
return to it later. Try typing "EXIT" at the DOS prompt
and see if an UPDATE screen pops up.
If it does then UPDATE was resident in memory which uses
about 132K and may reduce the available memory below the
other programs requirements. You should always exit the
UPDATE program from the "Exit UPDATE Program" option found
under the QUIT menu item.
When I ran UPDATE on my system the display and prompts were hard
to read. What's wrong?
Try using the /MONO switch when starting UPDATE this will
start you off with a black and white display which may be
easier to read. Then (if you prefer) you can change the
colors to suit your liking with the "Modify Colors..."
option. Don't forget to use the "Use as Default Settings"
to make your color changes permanent.

I don't like the way I have configured UPDATE is there a way to
get back to the default program settings?
Sure, all the user-defined settings are saved in a file
called UPDATE.INI simply delete this file and UPDATE will
use it's own built-in defaults.
NOTE: When UPDATE starts it looks for this file in the
current directory and the search path defined by the PATH=
statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. So remember to delete
any copies of UPDATE.INI that are in directories specified
in your search path also.
How can we prevent UPDATE from going to our CD/ROM which is drive
K:?
In UPDATE versions 2.10 and later we have added the capabi-
lity to specify what we call a "drive list". UPDATE builds
a drive list for you when it starts. The drive list is
found under the "Included drive(s) list" menu option on the
Update menu or by pressing the [F3] key.
Simply delete the drive letter(s) from this table and UPDATE
will not search it.
How can we prevent UPDATE from going to the file server WITHOUT
logging out of the LAN?
You have two options here, you can modify the "drive list"
by pressing the [F3] key, or you can toggle the menu option
"Scan network drive(s)" to "No". Choosing the latter will
prevent UPDATE from scanning ANY network drive however.
To eliminate a single network drive or drives from being
searched you MUST edit the drive letters out of the
"drive list".
